Our History

Winifred BakerThe Dominican University Winifred Baker Chorale has presented concerts to Bay Area audiences for over 50 years.  Winifred Baker, who served on the music faculty at Dominican for nearly half a century, founded the Chorale bearing her name in 1958.  A few years later she added the San Francisco Civic Chorale to her conducting duties.  For 40 years, the combined Chorales and their Chamber Choruses performed hundreds of concerts in the Bay Area, many times premiering new compositions.  The Chorale also appeared twice in New York's Carnegie hall and made six singing tours to the British Isles and France.

In 2000, The Winifred Baker Chorale combined with the Dominican University Chorus and the Winifred Baker Chorale under the direction of Craig Singleton, Chair of Dominican's Department of Music and Performing Arts.  The 110 voice students and community chorus has thrived under his expert leadership, continuing to perform music of the great choral masters and contemporary composers.  Audiences in Marin County, San Francisco and Petaluma have enjoyed the Chorale's many concerts.

For more information about the chorale and how you can join, please call the Dominican University Department of Music at (415) 485-3236.
